What Props Do I Need for Yoga?
Yoga is good for the body, mind, and soul. This doesn't refer to the "soul" you think of in religious terms, but the inner self that makes you you. If you're considering yoga as a form of exercise, a way to lose weight, or as a relaxing technique, then you are on your way to a life changing experience. You are not alone in your decision; yoga is a technique that has been around for centuries. The thing is though, yoga needs a level commitment that some people are not prepared for, plus some of the poses will take you beyond what you may be used to. To that end, you may be wondering what props you need for yoga.
There are basic things you are going to need to get started. You should first buy at least one yoga outfit to use just for your yoga sessions. Because of the different movements associated with yoga, these outfits should be comfortable and form-fitting but not so tight that they will interfere with your different positions. Additionally, some yoga tops have built in bras so you don't have to fuss with straps falling down. Fitted stretch pants, especially if they're 3/4 in length are often recommended. Go with what you are comfortable with.
The next thing you are going to need is a mat to do your sessions on. A good yoga mat should be at least three feet wide by four feet long or even longer, depending on your preferences. There are going to be times when you are required to grab the floor, so you want something you can hold onto. Because you are going to spend some time with your mat, you also want one that has cushioning, but is firm as well.
If you are going to be going to classes outside the home, you need one that folds or rolls up for easy transportation. Portable mats are easier to store when not in use. If possible, it is a good idea to try a mat out before buying it so you are comfortable with it.
There are also two more important aspects of doing yoga. One of them is finding the right classes or DVD to get you started. There are many different yoga videos available, so you should check around for one that starts you off with simple techniques, but also has positions that are more difficult as you advance. You don't have to spend a lot of money on these videos, you can find many inexpensive choices online through Amazon.
The next thing, and perhaps the most important over all others, is finding a place to do your sessions undisturbed. A spare bedroom or someplace quiet with no outside distractions where you can do your techniques undisturbed is a good idea.
You should also pick a time when you are not bothered by kids, phone calls, or people showing up. Some people like to do yoga early in the morning and others late at night after everyone has gone to bed. You need to have somewhere you feel comfortable, that has a good TV and DVD player, and has some kind of sound system where you can play soothing yoga-type music or other ambient sounds.
Yoga is something you can start without a lot of extras. Appropriate clothing, a mat, and a location are all the props you need for yoga.
